TSM Incubation and Entrepreneurship Cell

Thiagarajar School of Management (TSM) has been deliberating in the recent past to create a start-up ecosystem considering its rich experience over the last six decades in developing business leaders including some successful entrepreneurs across the world. Additionally, TSM would like to position itself as a leading resource centre in the areas of Entrepreneurship and Family Business (EFB) engaged in the MSME sector. The institute also foresees that the next round of economic growth coupled with self-sufficiency (atmanirbhar) initiatives of the government will be led by the MSMEs across the country in times to come. Hence, there is a need for deeper involvement with the industrial environment in this part of the country to offer managerial expertise and best practices to be ahead of their competitors across the country. TSM has a very strong team of faculty members with experience and expertise across the spectrum who are actively connected with industry in and around through MDPs, consultancy assignments, and short-term courses.

A core team was formed after inducting Mr. S. Krishna Kumar as Professor of Practice (Adjunct) to spearhead Incubation and Entrepreneurship initiatives at TSM along with a team of experienced faculty members and Prof. Murali Sambasivan, Director, being the mentor.

OBJECTIVES

  • Develop start-up ideation with students and take it up to incubation level.
  • Support MSMEs and family businesses in terms of initiatives and programs to help them scale up to the next level efficiently and profitably.
  • Collaborate with other stakeholders in the entrepreneurship ecosystem for a win-win set-up.

Some of the activities planned at this juncture are:

  • Encourage entrepreneurship instincts with students at the institute level.
  • Support external startups with guidelines and advice.
  • Support family businesses to scale up to the next level by offering unique solutions on a case-to-case basis and business/industry-specific.
  • Design and impart courses (short-term) for understanding contemporary best management practices relevant to their industry based on needs.
  • Execute consultancy/internships for long-term mutual benefits.
  • Provide industry-focused solutions by understanding common problems across the value chain.
  • Initiate strategic tie-ups with Govt. Institutions for specific entrepreneurial needs.
  • Focus on women entrepreneurs in and around Madurai.
  • Seek collaborations from large private business institutions to develop programs.
  • Exert added thrust on small manufacturing industries for cost efficiency and profitable expansion.
